Water Fowl

For loyal blog readers, you will have noticed I fell off the map a bit in the last two weeks. With starting a new job and getting set up in a new location, it has been difficult to capture new photos, edit them, and manage to get them up here in the digital world accompanied by words, any words, let alone coherent ones. But after some urging (Matt), I'm back!

Loyal readers will also remember that I have photographed and written about a good deal of water fowl in recent years. On a trip last Sunday to Portland's Oregon Zoo, there were several ducks there I couldn't pass up photographing. Ducks are interesting characters because they either are stationary and comply with my photo snapping, or are wild and erratic. I captured this little duck as he watched his friends play.

But as we stood there and observed these animals, Molly and I were struck by the gorgeous contrast and texture in this duck's feathers and the striking geometric manner in which they fell on his back. I zoomed in and snapped several shots in landscape and portrait of his body. After a black and white conversion in Silver Efex Pro that somewhat recreates a pinhole camera effect, I am extremely happy with the outcome. I hope you love it too!
