Another Dedication

Lately this blog has felt a bit like a Casey Kasem radio show. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy the pseudo long-distance dedications I've been making here on the blog. In fact, photos are partly meant to remind and to inspire us, and these snapshots have done just that in recent days. It began with Katie's Hippo and continues today with Hanna's Sea Otter.

I didn't know that Hanna was a fan of the otter, be it the North American River variety or the Southern Sea one I captured at Portland's Oregon Zoo. But it makes perfect sense to me since Hanna has a fun and lovable personality, and those adjectives are always adequately paired with the sea otter. In a lot of ways, sea otters are similar to humans: playful, diurnal, intelligent, and resourceful. They even use rocks and hard objects as tools to pry open shellfish. And otter males are even territorial during mating season. I told you there were similarities.

Southern Sea Otter

The Southern Sea Otter above could more appropriately be referred to as a California sea otter. I'm not sure if this otter is Thelma or Eddie, but either way it arrived at the Oregon Zoo in 2000 after being found abandoned off the coast of Central California as pups and briefly raised at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I did my best to edit the photo and remove some of the gunk on the glass separating me from this lovable little otter. I hope you enjoy it Hanna!
