Surprises

I recently visited the Chico Certified Farmers Market to photograph Fall produce for the Chico Enterprise-Record's column Sweet Basil & the Bee. Needless to say, I have some great snapshots of winter squash, flowers, and more to share with you all. But I had a couple photographic surprises at the market over the weekend.

First, pomegranates are in season here in California and you can find them in mass quantities at the market. The pomegranate--which means apple with many seeds--is extremely healthy for you and can add some delicious crunch to a variety of salads and rice dishes. Need an idea? Try my brown rice salad with apples, pomegranate seeds, and pine nuts. But if you pick up your pomegranates at the market in Chico, look carefully! The sign guiding you to them may be a bit misleading in its misspellings.

Farmers Market Spelling Bee

After photographing some gourds and squash at the market, I spun around to see two children patiently waiting for their parents, inventing their own fun while they wait. It has been quite rainy here and these kids took advantage of that!
