Portland's Big Celebration

For those of you not from around these parts, it's Rose Festival time in the Portland metro area. This means a variety of events including three parades, a court of female high school representatives, and the Waterfront Village. Last night I traveled downtown to capture some photos of the excitement and this upcoming Saturday Molly and I will be doing the 4-mile walk before the big Grand Floral Parade.

You'll have to wait on photos from the Waterfront Village, but I began my photo walk on the Eastbank Esplanade and captured the following shots. This walkway, lit by the fading sun, leads from the waterfront walkway up to the Morrison Bridge to cross into downtown Portland.

Going Up

As I made my way down the Eastbank Esplanade, I stopped to sit near this little pink flower and attempted to capture it. I really want a dedicated macro lens for situations like this.

Pretty in Pink

And eventually I made it to a bench overlooking a portion of the Waterfront Village, rides, two Coast Guard ships, and the sun fading behind downtown's various buildings, including Big Pink. This shot is a blending of various exposures to capture the full range of light in the scene.

  1. I love the pedestrian switchback shot and the way the clouds formed for the evening light in the third shot.
